Divers Institute of Technology, founded in 1968, was the brainchild of John Manlove, retired U.S. Navy Officer, and Leiter Hockkett, shipwright, underwater contractor. The institute was originally located in barge #41, in the Lake Union Ship Canal. It began with a training program of 14 weeks, and expanded it to 16 in 1975.
